ACTAR powstało w Barcelonie w 1993. Według strony Archinform firma ACTAR została ufundowana w 1994 roku. W 2006 roku ACTAR otworzył biuro w Nowym Jorku w celu dystrybucji swoich książek w Ameryce Północnej pod nazwą ACTAR D. Począwszy od 2012 roku ACTAR został przejęty przez północnoamerykańską firmę ACTAR D, która zmieniła nazwę na Actar Publishers.
