Ta grupa zawodowa była częścią Instytutu Inżynierów Radiowych (IRE). Po wchłonięciu IRE przez Instytut Inżynierów Elektryków i Elektroników (IEEE) w 1963 roku nazwa została zmieniona na IEEE Professional Technical Group on Information Theory, później uproszczona do IEEE Information Theory Group. Ostateczna nazwa IEEE Information Theory Society została przyjęta w 1989 roku.
