HfT Stuttgart powstała w 1832 r. jako Winter-Baugewerkeschule. W swojej historii podlegała licznym przemianowaniom: 1865 r. - Königliche Baugewerkeschule, 1869 r. - Königliche Württembergische Baugewerkeschule, 1918 r. - Württembergische Baugewerkeschule, 1924 r. - Staatliche Höhere Bauschule, 1938 r. - Staatsbauschule Stuttgart, 1964 r. - Staatliche Ingenieurschule für Bauwesen - Staatsbauschule Stuttgart, 1971 r. - Fachhochschule für Technik Stuttgart. Od 1 I 1995 r. pod obecną nazwą: Fachhochschule Stuttgart - Hochschule für Technik.
