Przed powstaniem IEEE w ramach IRE i AIEE działały grupy profesjonalne. Po ich połączeniu w 1963r. powstała IEEE Professional Technical Group on Vehicular Communications. Pod koniec 1963 zmieniła nazwę na Vehicular Communications Group, następnie na IEEE Vehicular Group, w 1967 na IEEE Vehicular Technology Group, a w 1978 na IEEE Vehicular Technology Society.
